Studies are obviously a good way to go about grasping the principals, but I also find searching down people who are awesome at this stuff and trying to figure out how they do it to be equally helpful.
Good luck, and keep up the good work-you have some excellent stuff here
Cool!!! Thanks soo much Dave!! I appreciate you getting back to me!!! I'm familiar with Sam Nielson-he's amazing!!! I think I might even own that Gnomon DVD? I'm going to keep at it and see what I come up with!!!
I recently graduated from Seneca College with a Diploma In Digital Media Arts, and a Certificate in Game Art and Animation. I’m looking to break into the 3D gaming industry here in Toronto. I enjoy creating 2D and 3D art, using Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, 3DS Max, Z-Brush, and Maya. I also have experience working in the Unreal three engine, and experience working with the motion capture software Vicon.

Hey Aaron, thanks for popping by my blog. In terms of useful stuff to help with lighting I presume you've seen Sam Nielson's blog?:

Search down anything and everything from him tutorial-wise.
There is also the Gnomon DVD/Download on practical light and colour:
